PACIFIC RIM

PACIFIC RIM

Matte Paintings and 3d environments

Pacific Rim (2013)

My final project at ILM. The project was challenging as I had to learn the 3dStudio Max software. The environment supervisor, a long time 3dstudio Max user, decided this would be the software used on the show. I did several matte paintings of the hero's base using traditional projections in Nuke and ILM's Zeno, as well as stormy skies for the opening sequence and Zbrush models of underwater rock formations for the climatic end sequence.

My final shot was of a Hong Kong waterfront as a Kaiju attacked. I modeled the buildings and props in Maya and rendered the final shot in 3dsMax and Vray adding Speedtree assets and other details. The ocean, rain, atmospherics (including lighting and other passes) were added in Comp, as well as a destructible building in the foreground and of course the Kaiju itself.
